Leather Cleaners

September 20th, 2008

The definition of a leather cleaner is a cleaning product that is water based and contains no oils, waxes, sealants or polyurethanes that can clog the pores. Cleaning of the leather surface is what they are designed to do without leaving any type of residue behind that will complicate your cleaning in the future.

Specialized leather urine removal products go even farther by penetrating the leather to remove embedded urine that has seeped into the cushions and padding.

You bath in water to remove the dirt and body odors. Would you bath in a bathtub full of oil? Probably not but we hope this example has cleared up any confusion you had.

Product Review Dawn Dishwashing Liquid

September 10th, 2008

During September 2008 we reviewed Dawn dishwashing liquid.

This product was purchased at retail for less then three dollars.

We tested Dawn dishwashing liquid for efficacy on our dishes and our pots and pans. Dawn performed well in the kitchen.

We filled a small sink full of clean water and one tablespoon of Dawn so we could measure our results.

On normal non greasy breakfast dishes it performed very well after a short soak.

On greasy dishes we had to increase the amount of Dawn to two tablespoons or more to get comparable results.

This is exactly the same protocol that would be appropriate regardless of the brand of dishwashing liquid that we were evaluating.

Overall Dawn dishwashing liquid performed strongly in the kitchen.

What about other household uses?

We sprayed some urine on upholstered furniture and allowed the urine to set up for twenty four hours.

We mixed three tablespoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid with sixteen ounces of water in a small spray bottle.

We sprayed the urine generously with the Dawn solution and waited several minutes.

The urine would not budge.

We repeated this test several times to validate our results.

Our conclusion is that Dawn dishwashing liquid is not effective at removing human or pet urine.

After examining the areas that we sprayed we concluded that no urine removal product would now be effective in those areas.

The very ingredients that make any modern dishwashing liquid effective will also turn any carpeting or upholstery that you spray them on into a chemical waste land.

Specialized cleaning products are always best when used in the manner the manufacturer intended.

Dawn dishwashing liquid is no exception.

Dawn dishwashing liquid as the name implies is designed and intended to be used in the kitchen.

It does a great job there and you can not ask any more from this competent product.

Asking Dawn dishwashing liquid to remove human and pet urine stains from your carpeting and upholstery is unreasonable and could result in you having to throw out that furniture or carpeting.

Cat Urine

April 26th, 2008

Cat urine is easily the hardest of the domesticated animal urines to remove. Cats are explorers and will urinate in the most unusual places in your home or apartment.

Regardless of the breed of cat you own Abyssinian, Ashera, American Bobtail, American Curl, American Ringtail, American Shorthair, American Wirehair, Balinese, Bambino, Bengal, Birman, Bombay, British Shorthair, Burmese, Burmilla, Chausie, Chartreux, Cornish Rex, Cymric, Devon Rex, Don Sphynx, Egyptian Mau, Elf, Exotic Shorthair, Havana Brown, Himalayan, Moggie, Japanese Bobtail, Javanese, Kinkalow, Korat, Kurilian Bobtail, Lambkin, LaPerm, Maine Coon, Manx, Miniature, Minskin, Munchkin, Napoleon, Nebelung, Norwegian Forest, Ocicat, Ojos Azules, Oriental Shorthair, Persian, Peterbald, Pixiebob, Ragdoll, RagaMuffin, Russian Blue, Safari, Savannah, Scottish Fold, Selkirk Rex, Serengeti, Serval, Skookum, Sokoke, Siamese, Siberian, Singapura, Snowshoe, Somali, Sphynx, Stray Teacup, Tonkinese, Toyger, Turkish Angora and Turkish Van cat urine is exceptionally strong and pungent.

In the wild you will routinely see tigers urinating on the barks of trees. This is the big cat’s way of marking his territory. It also demonstrates that cat urine is intended to be waterproof. Cat urine in the wild will survive repeated heavy rains and will still be very strong and pungent. Occasionally you will see the big cat return to the same tree and urinate on the same area to freshen up his markings.

This clearly demonstrates that Mother Nature has equipped this beautiful animal with a waterproof territorial marking system that is intended to defy the elements. Also it demonstrates that even if you successfully clean your home of the cat urine the cat is very likely to reoffend in exactly the same areas.

Recent scientific research suggests that all breeds of domestic cats are descendants of the wild cats that inhabit the Middle East. These wild cats are still present today in Israel and Saudi Arabia. The wild cats of the Middle East are the probable descendants of the big cats from Africa. Evidence suggests that cats actually domesticated themselves by climbing in thru the unprotected windows of ancient dwellings.

In addition cats are known to be very temperamental and any abrupt change in their living environment can set off a serious urination attack. A new baby, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband and even new neighbors can result in serious property damage to your home if you are not prepared for it.

Cat urine is easily the toughest of the pet urines that you could face in your home. Even fresh cat urine is very difficult to clean. Removing cat urine off any porous surface is serious business. Cat urine will put any cleaning product to the test.

There are very few cleaning products that have demonstrated any effectiveness with cat urine. For cat urine you should seriously consider a professional quality liquid that is able to penetrate the cat urine and neutralize the strong cat urine odor.

When you find a cat urine cleaning product that is successful in your home or apartment we suggest you keep it on hand in a convenient place so when your cat decides to freshen up his markings you will be ready for the big event.

We tested the Proklean cat urine product in May 2006.

We tested the Urine Off cat urine product in April 2008.

Product Review Urine Off Odor Stain Remover

April 26th, 2008

During April 2008 we purchased this product at retail. When we were researching Urine Off we found no fewer then thirty entries or three entire pages on Google.

We purchased a bottle of the Urine-Off Odor and Stain Remover. This product is manufactured by Bio-Pro Research, LLC 1701 Biotech Way Sarasota Florida 34243.

We selected the product that was Specifically Formulated for Cat & Kitten Urine Veterinarian Strength.

We paid twenty three dollars for a sixteen ounce spray bottle.

The veterinarian was unwilling to offer a warranty on this product.

We used cat urine from a twenty pound tom that loves to spray. We allowed the cat urine to dry and set up for at least forty eight hours before we began the testing.

     Some tests required repeated applications.

Frankly we were disappointed with the results considering the prolific advertising for this product.

The bottom line is this product scored a five on a scale of ten for effectiveness.

Credentials

January 28th, 2008

In this day and age you can never be too careful.

We strongly encourage you to do a two step authentication process before engaging in any type of financial transaction on the Internet.

Step one authenticates the site as having incorporated the proper information protection strategies including the installation of a recognized SSL Certificate.

Step two is Identity Assurance Certification by a reconignized Identity Assurance Authority such as DigiCert or Verisign.

Websites that have the proper credentials will prominently display these seals.

Simply click on the seals to validate whether the website has the proper Secure Socket Layer Certificate installed and whether they are working.

The SSL Certificate makes it virtually impossible for your personal information to be stolen during the ordering process.

A 128 bit encryption certificate is good with 256 bit encryption the very best.

We recommend an Identity Assurance policy of at least a quarter million dollars.

This is your assurance that the Identity Assurance Authority has carefully scrutinized the credentials of the web site operator to ensure that they are who they say they are.

Product Review Proklean Leather Cleaner

November 8th, 2007

This product was purchased from the Genuine Proklean web site for less then thirty dollars.

The Proklean leather cleaner is unusual in that it is the only leather cleaner we researched that claimed any efficacy removing cat and dog urine from leather furniture.

Their product selection logic will give you a good idea whether you are likely to be successful.

Their Urine Removal page is simple and to the point.

We performed two tests.

In the first test we used a new leather sofa and treated the sofa with a waterproofing agent that contained bees wax.

We reapplied the waterproofing agent several times replicating a conscientious homeowner protecting her investment.

We sprayed six ounces of cat urine on the leather sofa and waited several days for the urine to dry.

Consistent with the advice posted on the Proklean website the cat urine was very difficult to remove.

In the second test we used an identical leather sofa that had not been waterproofed.

We sprayed six ounces of cat urine on the leather sofa and waited several days for the urine to dry.

Our product evaluator was successful locating and eliminating the cat urine using her black light and following the simple product instructions even thou she did not know where the cat urine had been sprayed.

The Leather Cleaner was easy to use and our results were excellent.

If you have already engaged in heavy leather conditioning or have waterproofed your leather furniture you should consider throwing the item away.

During our controlled testing on cat urine the leather cleaner scored a ten for effectiveness. This product should work just as well on dog urine.

The Proklean leather cleaner earned a strong buy recommendation.

May 23rd, 2007

During the second quarter of 2007 we evaluated the Windex original glass cleaner.

Testing was conducted on windows and bathroom mirrors.

Viva brand paper towels were selected due to their excellent absorbency characteristics.

We compared our results to the popular plus cleaner.

The glass cleaner that was useable on other surfaces failed our testing.

If you are looking for shine buy a polish.

If you want great looking windows and mirrors purchase Windex.

Windex earns a strong buy recommendation.

The wolf is the ancestor of all dogs. All dog breeds are the proud descendants of the majestic wolf. You need to completely understand the behaviors and the psychology of the wolf before beginning your dog urine cleaning project. Reviewing the following paragraphs will prepare you for what you can reasonably expect from your dogs.

Wolves are super predators. In the wild wolves have been observed hunting and conducting complex coordinated attacks on large prey such as grizzly bears. Wolves can accomplish this amazing feat hunting and killing a predator many times their size because they are intelligent. The wolves have excellent communications skills and the pack is completely unified in their goal.

When not hunting for food wolves show tremendous affection to their cubs. All members of the wolf pack join in the rearing and feeding of all cubs. Wolves are excellent doting parents showing tremendous affection and patience with their offspring.

Wolves employ scent marking to mark the territories they inhabit. The markings have two basic purposes. The first is to mark the areas that they share with their family members. The second is to clearly delineate their living and hunting areas as a warning to other wolves that they have claimed this territory and intruders would not be welcome.

Is your dog breed capable of scent marking? Maybe depending on how close or how far your dog is on the canine evolutionary ladder. For example if you own a large breed dog such as a German Shepard the closely resembles the wolf then it is more likely that your dog would engage in territorial scent marking behavior.

If you own a small terrier that bears little to any resemblance to wolves and is much farther down on the canine evolutionary ladder than it is potentially less likely that your small breed dog would engage in scent marking behavior.

Potentially is the key word here because when you breed for one characteristic such as small diminutive size you sometimes inherit some unexpected and unwelcome behaviors.

If you own one of the dog breeds that has been bred for hunting, shepherding, running or other aggressive physical activity make sure your dog gets enough clean water.  As the dog’s muscles work their bodies will need that clean water to flush out their kidneys and prevent dehydration.

As a rule dogs do not typically act out because they are unhappy with their environments. When dogs urinate in a home or apartment it is typically because the dog’s bladder is full and they simply cannot hold the urine anymore.

A dog that is pregnant or that is sick will have a much harder time holding their urine so be mindful of your dog’s medical condition and respond accordingly.

Some smaller dogs will urinate quite a bit more than some much larger breeds and this may be associated more with the individual dog’s personality than with other contributing factors.

Puppy urine is much easier to clean up than the urine from a mature dog like a German Shepherd. Fresh dog urine is always easier to clean up than old stale dog urine that has been allowed to soak into your carpeting for several months.

Don’t complicate your cleaning as dog urine that has not been contaminated by different cleaning products is easier to clean up than dog urine that is sitting under a miniature toxic waste dump.

During 2006 we evaluated several of the Genuine Proklean cleaning products and this is where we would focus our search. Their quality and consistency were very high. If you are trying to remove dog urine we suggest you visit their site.

We are planning a full evaluation report on their dog urine products at some point in the future.
